With Karina Wilson on fiddle from Santa Fe, Jeff Spero on keyboard from Santa Monica (also of the Syncopaths, our Dance Camp band for 2015), and Susie Kendig caller from Juneau (and elsewhere along the west coast)

Here’s the skinny with full info here.

SAT DANCE WORKSHOPS 10:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Pioneer Park Dance Hall
SUN MUSICIAN AND CALLER WORKSHOPS 11:30am to 1:30pm at the Pioneer Park

You can see a video of Karina with Jeff here.

Karina Wilson is a Santa Fe-based fiddler who has been playing for contra dances since she was 8 years old. She’s trained in classical violin performance, landing her a first-violin position in the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association’s ambassador quartet at age 16.

Jeff Spero is an accomplished piano player who helps drive the dance music for bands such as Syncopaths, Euphoria, Jibberish, Flutatious, and Jax by providing wonderfully inventive and surprising piano accompaniments.

Susie Kendig has called dances up and down the west coast, recently ended up in Juneau.

Dance Camp update Fri, 08 Aug 2014 06:42:26 +0000 Continue reading ]]> Early registration rates are over. However, in an effort to address gender balance, lead dancers/gents’ role registrants will be charged the discounted ‘early bird’ registration, first come, first serve until balance is achieved. Make that adjustment in your registration.

We are working on the schedule still, but do promise some exciting activities and workshops with our guest band members and caller. See the list of potential workshops here.

Dance Camp North registration! Thu, 19 Jun 2014 22:58:14 +0000 Continue reading ]]> Dance Camp North early bird registration is open for Dance Camp North 2014 set for Labor Day Weekend Aug. 31-Sept. 2. A reminder that our band is the hot Nor’easter band out of Boston and long-sought caller Nils Fredland of New Hampshire. Registration will be first come-first serve. Early bird rates end July 31. This may seem a long way away, but time has a way of slipping by, especially in Alaska under the near-perpetual sun. Questions? or call 907-479-0388.

Annual meeting Sun, 18 May 2014 22:25:44 +0000 Continue reading ]]> Contra Borealis Dancers held their annual meeting last night in conjunction with a benefit chili-fest for a dancer who lost her house in a fire a little while ago.

We approved last year’s minutes, had oral reports from various board and involved members from past year’s activities and for direction on this next year. We also did some cleanup on our 1998 bylaws by adding the position of vice-president and by assigning the selection of officers to the board rather than the general membership.

A new board was elected by the membership (24 people present):

    Andie Rice
    Gary Newman
    Tom Lyngholm
    Alan Braley
    Theresa Vick
    Will Hargrove
    Kelly Egger
    Curtis Watkins
    Susan Delisa

Thanks went out to out-going president Barbara Braley for her many years of service. She volunteered to co-coordinate scheduling.

Following the annual meeting, the new board met and elected officers for the next year.

    President: Andie Rice
    Vice-president: Gary Newman
    Tom Lyngholm: Secretary
    Alan Braley: Treasurer

Fairbanks Callers Collective arises Mon, 10 Mar 2014 04:45:05 +0000 Continue reading ]]> The first gathering of the Fairbanks Callers Collective happened at the Basham’s this afternoon. Their housesitters weren’t apprised of it in advance, but happily rolled with the punches, or at least stomping on the floor above them.

It was a grand affair with 7 of the group that attended David Kaynor‘s calling workshop at the Winter Dance Weekend a couple weeks ago. These folks are taking off, with live music provided at various times by Charley Hunt, Nancy Bayer, Gary Newman, Jeff Organek and John Adams.

The next meeting will be at the same location 2 pm on March 30, 2014, trying to establish the 4th Sunday of each month. Contact for further info and especially if you are interested in learning how to call.
