Saturday dance workshops
Wood Center Conference Rooms C-D-E-F

Session 1 – 10:30 am – 12:00 pm   Like Butter: Dances that Flow

Nowhere within this group of dances will you find yourself with the wrong hand free, or pointed the wrong direction, or anything else that might interrupt your dance trance.  These dances are all carefully crafted by some of the best minds in modern contra choreography.

Session 2 – 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm   Cross-pollination!

A session of English dances that could be contra dances, and vice versa.  Can you tell the difference?   We will also talk about making dances fun with smooth moves.

Session 3 – 2:45 pm – 4:15 pm   Challenging contras

What does ‘experienced’ mean? It means: (according to the Concord contradance series)
• You know how to do a roll away, California twirl, pass through to a wave, contra corners, and the basic moves without being taught
• You know where to be at the start of each dance phrase and how to recover from a lapse
• You assist your partner and neighbor to the next move
• You execute flourishes safely and on time without disturbing others
This being said, we are in Fairbanks, so we are forgiving if you have the desire to learn the above.

Saturday Evening Dance 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm   Dancing With Style
Wood Center Ballroom

Have a great experience with basic and not-so-basic dance principles taught in a fun way.  Swings that are fun for both people, allemandes that don’t hurt, timing that supports everyone having a great dance experience.

Sunday Contradance musician and caller workshops 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Pioneer Park Dance Hall

Nor’easter Band Workshop – bring your instruments.
Nor’easter will discuss approaches to playing contra dance music with musicians. The emphasis will be on making “danceable dance music”: music that’s inspiring and responsive to the dancers. Tips and tricks will be shared. Time may be spent work-shopping dance arrangements with interested bands.

Contra Calling for Everyone
Anyone can lead contra dances, and this workshop is designed to get you started.  We’ll talk about teaching techniques, microphone skills, crowd control, and much more.  You’ll leave with some easy dances, and tools to help you keep practicing on your own.

$10 or $15 suggested donation.

Sunday 7:00 pm – A concert with Nor’easter
College Coffeehouse

Nor’easter will diverge from their standard contradance music fare to share some of their more creative musical endeavours. We might even get Max to sing a song or two.

Admission $10
